G.E.M.S. SPRING/SUMMER CALENDAR OF EVENTS

MAY

Special Thanks to Dr. Gwen Allen of Gardena Women's Center and her sorority sisters of Delta Sigma for inviting G.E.M.S to their Big Hat Brunch.   Special Thanks to TeQuisha Russ of Magic Shoppe Hair Studio and Shante Broadus, President of the First Ladies Club for honoring the mothers of G.E.M.S. with a fabulous P O P STAR Event.  G.E.M.S.' appreciates your help in making our moms feel so appreciated and loved on Mother's Day!

JUNE through AUGUST

                        Communities that Care $10 Tribute:

Sponsors, local businesses, and members of the community are encouraged to donate $10 for the much needed Summer Lunch Program.  Lunches are provided during commuinty awareness classes so that children can be guaranteed at least one healthy meal a day during the summer.

JULY

Fireworks Safety - Los Angeles Fire Department

                                Safety Awareness/Choices and Responsibility Workshop:

In our Safety Awareness Workshop participants learn effective safety and self defense techniques that will aid in the prevention of abduction.  Topics covered include, but are not limited to:

·         Profile of a Pedophile/Identities of a Perpetrator

·         Common Lures

·         Odds of Being Abducted

In our Choices and Responsibility Workshop participants learn how to use sound judgment and common sense to make responsible choices.  We encourage our youth to be leaders and not to be easily persuaded to follow the crowd when their peers are making irresponsible choices.

*Resource Materials needed:  Think 5-a guide to assist youth with thinking critically.

AUGUST

                        Poverty Awareness:

Families go on an Enrichment Outing that consists of a 4 hour tour of the greater Los Angeles area.  The trip goes from the most affluent areas to the most poverty stricken areas in order to create an

awareness of the thin line between the haves and the have nots.  The tour ends at a homeless shelter where our families meet homeless families and hear their stories about how they ended up homeless and the steps they are taking to get to a better place.

*Families present mission residents with gift bags consisting

                                 personal hygiene items.
